Innovative & Fun Roof for Dental Building in Amarillo, Texas
by Christopher McGroarty, director commercial roofing membranes marketing, GAF
Amarillo Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (AOMS) in Amarillo, Texas, provides solutions to a wide variety of problems related to the mouth, teeth, and facial region. It’s an esteemed medical practice in the Texas Panhandle that requires a state-of-the-art facility to allow the staff to provide superior levels of patient care. One of the most impressive and innovative parts of the facility is its clean, reflective roof that fits stunningly with the architecture of the building.
The 12,000 sq. ft. building was designed by Playa Design Studio, Amarillo, and utilized a contemporary architecture aesthetic along with exterior lighting to attract attention. The owner, Dr. William Graves, frequently flies over the area in his plane, so he requested AOMS to be painted on the roof. Playa Design Studio was the perfect choice for the job. The Playa team provided a fresh aesthetic and contextually appropriate designs, giving form to the building owner’s mission, aspirations, and unique perspective in their industry and the community. They believe in a holistic approach to a final architecture solution and every detail is critical to the cohesive expression of the whole. The AOMS building is a clear representation of the diligently researched creative process that Playa Design Studio takes on. Because of this impressive attention to detail and demand for superior finished products, Playa Design Studio relied on high-quality building products to bring their vision to life. Tecta America® of Amarillo was the roofing contractor on the job, and they welcomed the uniqueness of the project with excitement.
The TPO system used consists of GAF EverGuard® TPO 60 mil fully adhered membrane using EverGuard #1121 Bonding Adhesive over mechanically attached EnergyGuard™ Polyiso and EnergyGuard HD Polyiso Cover Board. EverGuard TPO 60 mil has heat-welded seams that provide greater seam strength to taped and other seams. It also has excellent long-term heat and UV resistance, making it a wonderful choice for the state’s hot climate.
EnergyGuard Polyiso is made of glass fiber-reinforced cellulosic felt facers bonded to a core of isocyanurate foam. It is a lightweight insulating product that provides high thermal performance. Because of its light weight, the Tecta America team had greater maneuverability on the roof and found the installation time to be quite quick.
For the AOMS logo on the roof, GAF TPO Red Primer was used to ensure good adhesion over the TPO, and United Coatings™ Roof Mate™ TCM Coating in blue was used to create the logo. Roof Mate is a water-based acrylic elastomeric top coat. It uniformly covers the substrate to form a monolithic coating that helps provide protection from normal weathering, aging, and ultraviolet exposure.
“The TPO roof system worked especially well for this project because there are options for creating the rooftop graphics. On this particular project, we simply utilized United Coatings Roof Mate TCM Coating to create an AOMS stencil on the rooftop. There were also discussions of creating a Texas flag graphic on the rooftop as well,” said Ryan Kuxhausen, project manager at Tecta America. “It was awesome to be part of this project due to its one-of-a-kind architecture, as well as the special effects and details that were incorporated into the final product.”
The uniqueness of the medical building doesn’t stop with its roof logo, either. Using special-effects lighting, the AOMS building can change color, and Graves lights up his building depending on the occasion. In addition to allowing the doctor the ability to showcase his fun personality, the new GAF roof system protects what matters most and allows the AOMS staff to continue to change lives and put smiles on their patients’ faces.
