Exceptional Protection For Lakeside Wood Deck in Zephyr Cove, Nevada
by Steve Getsiv, president, Nova Products Inc.
With a clear view of the cobalt blue waters of the northwestern end of Lake Tahoe, Tim Wulf and his wife Linda retired to their dream home in Zephyr Cove, Nevada, to enjoy the magnificent pine-scented atmosphere along the nation’s second deepest lake and one of the country’s premier vacation getaways. Built into the side of a cliff, 6,500’ above sea level, the Wulf home, which was originally built in 1963 and renovated in 2016, features four fireplaces, 14’ elevated ceilings, and 8’ glass patio doors that look onto 1,080 sq.ft. of Batu decking and a stunning view of Lake Tahoe.
“We renovated the entire home but were careful to keep the rustic look and feel of the old cabin that formerly stood here,” explained Wulf. “It’s an idyllic location set in the alpine mountains and yet within a short drive of every amenity ranging from fine shops and dining to world-famous casinos and ski resorts. This is the life we always wanted.”
To further the experience, the Wulf’s meticulous online search for housing materials and contemporary design ideas resulted in the purchase of the best possible decking material they could find. Tucked into the snowy Sierra Nevada mountain range, this included deck boards able to withstand the extreme weather ranging from 90º summers to freezing winters filled with blizzards and snow accumulations that can total more than six feet in a single month.
“We wanted something that looked gorgeous and would really hold up to the elements,” offered Wulf. “A great deal of time was spent researching all the alternatives, but it was all worth it. People can’t take their eyes off the deck. The red Batu deck boards blend beautifully with our home’s cedar siding to provide the perfect backdrop for a spectacular view of the lake below and surrounding forested areas.”
To prolong the deck’s beauty year-long, at the end of last year the Wulfs applied Nova USA’s ExoShield Wood Stain to the deck boards after an exhaustive online review of alternative products. ExoShield was designed to provide long-lasting, superior protection for exterior decking, siding, and outdoor furniture. Using a proprietary blend of tung oil, UV blockers, fungicide, and trans-oxide pigments, ExoShield’s water-resistant, acid-resistant formula helps delay graying and protect against water damage, fungi, and harmful UV rays. It was also developed to enhance wood stability, reduce cracking or warping, and create a naturally durable finish with exceptional color stability.
“ExoShield is an extremely forgiving, penetrating stain,” added Wulf. “It only took 40 minutes to apply with a cloth. Plus, the stain worked so well on the deck that we used it on our custom-built set of wood patio chairs and table. The entire combination now blends together perfectly with the decking to create an exquisite setting for enjoying the countryside any time of the year, weather permitting.”
